[Movies] Karl Urban Talks Star Trek 2
Posted by Larry Csonka on 11.19.2009

- Karl Urban, who played Dr. Leonard McCoy in JJ Abrams version of Star Trek, recently spoke with IGN.com, and discussed what he would like to see in Star Trek 2. Here are some highlights…

On The Story Of The First Film: "The structure wasn't really the traditional triumvirate that you've seen on the television show. It was really more a movie about establishing everybody. I certainly hope that [screenwriters] Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and J.J. [Abrams, the first film's director] continue to strengthen and evolve those characters into those directions."

On What He Wants To See: "I would love to play scenes being essentially Kirk's moral compass or point of conscience. The way McCoy was written he really sort of verbalized the war going on in Kirk's conscience, and I certainly would love to see more arguments of passion versus logic with Spock because they're always fun. So it's going to be really interesting to see what they come up with."

And What Kind Of Mission Would He Like To See?: "I think the challenge is to come up with the most important mission, the mission that literally tears these people apart. The mission that is the definitive Trek mission. We have to come up with something akin to a Dark Knight or The Empire Strikes Back. Something like that."

Maybe they could go back in time to save themselves as children.

O no, don't go the " TDK rout" hope, they keep it a little campy

I don't think he means dark like the Dark Knight was, only that it was sort of the definitive Batman sequel, and they need to come up with a definitive sequel for Trek.

It's quite clear he's talking in terms of a definitive sequel as good or superior to the first film that's also more powerful dramatically, not a commentary on "dark" content. Unless you think TESB is particularly dark. Sure, it's darker than ANH or RotJ, but come on.
